We’ve got a gorgeous beaut for the first in our monthly series ‘B&G Interviews’. We are gathering experts in their field to people to just think you’ll LOVE, throwing some questions at them and seeing what magic they show us!
Firstly we’ve got Deb, hair styling sorceress! Based out of her own salon Hairsmiths (we’ll link all the deets after the interview), she’s here to let us in on some hair care secrets and a little more about her that you might not have known about!
1)Your 4 morning necessities to get you through the day!
*Coffee is the first & most important part of my morning process. It has to be a rich roast, tall & with skimmed or coconut milk.
*my label.m Soft bristle brush to relieve tangles in my mega long hair, that is possibly the easiest Barnett in the world to handle, is something I reach for without fail every morning. It does knot up easily (prob down to the fact it’s ancient hair, has had a lifetime of colour & I often go to bed with it slung up) – a stylist should know better but we are often the worst culprits! However I brush it out daily & the soft bristles minimise breakage & further knotting, then contemplate what inner alter ego I’ll be channelling in the hair dept for that day before setting to work on creating some number a top my head!
*Large paddle ghd straighteners were a revelation to me when I discovered them on set last year. I was for once sat in the stylist chair (this doesn’t happen very often), having hair & makeup done for a shoot. My stylist laid me back horizontal in a therapists chair and let me hair fall with gravity before waving it with the large straighteners. I had no view of what was happening but was thrilled with the results. The large paddle means I can straighten my hair in 4 quick sections or wave it with loose perfection in next to no time. Which is great for me as I have approx 7 mins hair window time between breakfast & the school run!
5) Top celebrity hair crush and why:
Always Gwen Stefani.
Literally never takes a day off in the hair dept. Even in sweats, trainers & shades, she has not a root in sight & has “considered” her hair. On the red carpet she is obviously immaculate having been primped to perfection, but the woman has discipline even on her day off. Even her topknots are chic. Thorough goals.
6) Favourite past time
•when I’m in need, a 30 minute back massage at The Rub on Pottergate on a lunchbreak is pure heaven. No need to book an appointment & you feel 10 feet taller afterwards! And also facials with Louise at U & Your Skin. The woman is literally a genius.
*Ester Lauder double wear – like emulsion for the face. Literally transforms me into a human being each day. Unrecognisable without it.
2) What do you feel is trending in hair at the moment that will be big this year?
*Love love loving braids ATM & we can’t get enough of them in salon! S/S 17 LFW We (Labelm session team) worked plaits & braids galore backstage, and this is a trend that is filtering down beautifully on to the high street & everyday life. There’s a braid out there to suit everyone & it’s a great quick fix if you want to create interest but not change your style. These can be practised & perfected on yourself but it takes hours. Just pop in to your stylist & get them to whip you something up!! Also a blunt above the eyebrow fringe is always my personal fave, a result of learning my trade in the 90’s! It’s instant chic power hair statement heaven, plus it’s adds instant structure. I’m currently championing cutting fringes with clippers, but that’s not for the faint hearted!!
3) Any tips on helping your hair through the winter?
Invest in a good product regime.
Condition condition condition
We work a lot with olaplex on the colour level, then a good tailored product selection from our Label.m range in store. We are all great advocates of the range & are happy to help advise clients on what will work best for their hair. Working with the four C model of: Cleanse, Condition, Create & Complete, we can show you how to maintain the salon results that your stylist provides. You wouldn’t buy a Persian cat & feed it fish food, so why would you have hair goals but not have a regime to keep it in tip top condition?
Invest in your hair & you will be rewarded with great results.
4) 4 best styles to wear your hair if you have limited time in the morning
Wash hair the night before
Day 1 straighten dry hair for a sleek finish
Day 2 a little dry shampoo, curl/tousled hair with sea salt & diffuse or bend with wavers.
Day 3 dry shampoo & pin hair up taking advantage of the previous day’s curls i.e.: twist or loose halo braid.
Day 4 scrape that Barnet into a topknot and pull whisps around the face. Killer lipstick & earrings are a must!
7) Favourite watering hole
42 King St. Lemon curd martinis are to die for. I actually daydream about them. Once upon time I was all about quantity over quality. Now it’s the other way round. Precious nights out are for savouring the most delicious things in life. Plus they do the most amazing tapas, the clientele is select & the space intimate. Absolute heaven.
8) Favourite colour
I’m like a colour palette peacock. Sometimes it’s all about the nudes, some times camo chic, sometimes head to toe black. For me it’s not just about colour, it’s more about texture & feel. I love everything all at once & lots of it!!! Visually noisy is a good summary.
9) Favourite song
My cd collection is vast, my iTunes fit to burst! My Boyf used to be a dj & for years I lived the club life, so the range in our house is vast. I am pretty much old school garage, drum n bass & hip hop. Last week end we raved at Brixton academy to just that (as we did 20 years ago). Possibly one of my all timefavourite songs is Long Walk by Jill Scott, Marlene Shaw has her moments in my heart & i do keep a Rage against the Machine cd in the car. It’s all about variety!!
10) Favourite quote
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
We loved getting to know Deb a whole lot better, and some really great tips for your hair over the following year!
